The Last Straw!

According to this story in the Atlanta Journal Constitution, a national coalition of churches has decided that Bishop Thomas Weeks must step down from the pulpit as a consequence of his physical assault on his wife “prophetess’ Juanita Bynum.

Good call guys, what took you so long? Let me see if I understand this.

When Bishop Weeks divorced his first wife, that was not enough to force him out of his position as Bishop and pastor?  And when he married the” prophetess” Bynum, herself a divorced woman, nary a word was heard in opposition.

1Tim 3:2
A bishop then must be …..the husband of one wife....

And when Weeks left a trail of debts and unpaid bills even before his marriage to Bynum, no one said a word.  Over $100,000 of unpaid debts notwithstanding, Weeks and Bynum reportedly spent over $1,000,000 on their nationally televised nuptials. But of course ostentatious displays of wealth at the expense of the sheep are nothing to demand accountability over.

Titus 1:7
For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; …….not given to filthy lucre..

I’m trying to remember, was there an outcry from church leaders when Weeks hosted his lewd and lascivious version of the Newlywed Game? I guess that was OK since he did it in the guise of “perfecting love”

1Tim 3:2
A bishop then must be blameless …..of good behaviour....

Still not enough? How about the fact that by the time Weeks and Bynum were separating, an eviction order was issued forcing him from their leased $2.5 million mansion?

1Tim 3:7
Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil
.

Ok, Ok I understand. Those things could have happened to anybody. We can’t expect our church leaders to set an example for the rest of us. We can’t hold them to a higher standard. Why everybody knows the devil attacks the leadership more than he does the laity. We must be forgiving and cut them some slack.

James 3:1
My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation

So, tell me guys, do you see anything amiss here? Has Weeks fulfilled his role as Bishop according to scripture?

Titus 1:7
For a bishop must be blameless, …not soon angry …….no striker….

Hallelujah! You found one that would stick. Glory to God! After a long and diligent search you’ve finally discovered a scriptural basis for removing this guy from ministry.

Now, tell me, what’s your plan? Wait, let me guess. I’ll bet you’re going to get together a group of elders and come up with a restoration and accountability plan in order to restore Weeks back to ministry as soon as possible? Sure, that’s the ticket. I mean that’s what the church always does isn’t it? Surely that is in the bible somewhere.

While you’re looking, allow me to offer an alternative prescription for the man’s restoration.

1Cor 5:11-13
But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat. For what have I to do to judge them also that are without? do not ye judge them that are within? But them that are without God judgeth. Therefore put away from among yourselves that wicked person.
